May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, which recognizes the contributions and influence of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islander Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States. Learn about and celebrate a diverse array of cultures through art, music, film, and even food in NYC this month!

Here are 5 ways to celebrate:

Read and Watch Stories from Asian/Pacific Islander Writers, Directors, & More
Try a new movie, TV show or book created by and featuring Asian-American and Pacific Islanders' voices. AAPI representation in American media has come a long way in recent years- check out these films, authorsgraphic novels, and more! This year is also the first AAPI Children's Literary Festival at Asia Society!

Listen and Learn
Podcasts are another great way to learn something new directly from people who've experienced it- start your journey with this list from the Asian American Podcaster Association! You can also check out by contemporary and traditional music by AAPI artists at the World Trade Center, Lincoln Center, The Red Pavilion, and the Glow Cultural Center, and take in a dance performance at the Asian American Arts Alliance.

Attend a Local Arts or Cultural Event
We're lucky to live in one of the most diverse cities in the country, so attending local festivals and events is an excellent way to meet and learn about your neighbors!
Check out readings, classes, workshops, tours and more from the Brooklyn Public Library and New York Public Library, NYC Parks, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Asia Society.
Attend this year's AAPI Cultural Heritage Parade and/or Japan Parade, shop at pop-up markets in Downtown BrooklynBarclays Center, and Industry City, or attend the Queer AAPI Food Festival at The Center!

Practice Traditional Yoga
Yoga originated in India over 5000 years ago and has since become widely popular. This month, follow along a guided video of traditional yoga or find an in person class near you! (We have several local yoga studios and teachers in our Community Partnership Program!) You can also learn more about the traditions and history of yoga here.

Support AAPI Businesses
Celebrate Asian and Pacific Islander culture with flavor (and financial support)!
